Little Robin Redbreast

Little Robin Redbreast stood in the street, Car came racing, Robin's wings did beat, Dipping down she glided, teasing as she flied nearer, Up a puff of feathers went, in the rearview mirror. ~ Ailyn Zel 4-4-2006

As I was driving to work this morning, a little robin stood in the street. As I approached it saw me and began to fly away. First it flew up and briefly to the left. Then it flew down and to the right in a beautiful arc as most birds do. I am always amazed at their speed, how they can zoom so close to a car and get away. It's almost like they are playing "chicken" and running across a train track as a train comes barreling down. Well... this time it didn't work. I heard a small thud and looked out the rearview mirror. What did I see but a little red bird, rolling in the street and a puff of feathers exploding in the air.

Yes I was sad, not intending to kill the bird... but I must admit I chuckled seeing the puff of feathers. I thought that only happened in movies?

At least it wasn't a skunk. I hit a skunk once while in California on business. I had to trade in my rental car. I could not take the smell any longer.

Poor birdy, but as grandpa Willie always said, 'its the bird or the beast but it ain't me' - well no, I don't have a grandpa Willie, but I have been watching loads of Frasier ("dr" Mary and her uncle Willie) - but yes, better the bird than you. It's a cut(e)ragedy.

The only thing I've ever hit was a suicidal squirrel. I swear, he was sitting on the curb, watching the car, so I thought he'd just sit on the curb and wait for me to pass by, but noooo! The little freak waited for his moment and then jumped in front of the car.
